Latvia: Life expectancy up 22 years over century: statistics

Life expectancy in Latvia has increased by 22.4 years over 100 years, according to data from the Central Statistical Bureau (CSP), LSM reports. Average life expectancy at birth rose from 53.1 years in 1924 to 75.5 years in 2023. Female life expectancy rose by 24 years from 56.4 to 80.4 years and male life expectancy by 20.5 years from 49.9 to 70.4 years over the 100-year period. The gender gap was just 5.7 years in 1924-1938 but has been 9-10 years in the past decade. The highest average life expectancy recorded was 75.6 years in in 2019. The statistics now include data from 1924-1943, which was previously missing.
