The number of passengers using train transport in Latvia totalled 8,989,953 in the first half of 2024, which was 767,317 (9.3%) more than in the same period of 2023, according to the country’s state-owned passenger train operator, Pasazieru Vilciens (Vivi), LSM reported. Electric trains on suburban routes carried 8,024,544 passengers, which was 89% of the total. Diesel trains on regional routes carried 965,409 passengers or 11% of all train passengers in six months. The most popular routes were to Tukums with 3,214,072 passengers (up 15%), Aizkraukle with 2,341,466 passengers (up 10%), and Jelgava with 1,443,244 passengers (up 3%). Electronic tickets accounted for 49% of all tickets sold. Average train punctuality was 97.2%.
