Lithuania: Cargo plane crash in Vilnius likely caused by technical fault or human error

The crash of Spanish air carrier Swiftair’s cargo plane in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, on 25 November 2024 may have been caused by a technical fault or pilot error, LRT reports. One crew member perished in the incident. Surviving crew members had no indication of foul play, and investigators have found no evidence of terrorism. The pilot had misread the frequency to contact air traffic control, which may have confused the crew. In the last moment, the pilot seemed to be trying to pull the plane’s nose back up, but it was too late, an aviation expert said. Investigators from Lithuania, Germany, Spain, and the US are involved in the official probe. The wreckage of the Boeing 737 aircraft, which was carrying DHL parcel freight from Leipzig to Vilnius, has now been removed from the crash site, BNS reports.
