Lithuania: LSDP hopes to form three-party centre-left coalition

Lithuania’s main opposition party, the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (LSDP), hopes to form a new coalition government with two other opposition parties, the Union of Democrats for Lithuania (DSVL) and the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union (LVZS), LRT reports. The three parties won 33 out of 70 seats in the first round of parliamentary elections on 13 October 2024. LSDP leader Vilija Blinkeviciute hopes that the three parties will have enough seats to form a new government after the second round of voting in single-member constituencies on 27 October 2024. She did not rule out cooperation with the Lithuanian Liberal Movement (LLS) but rejected collaboration with the new far-right party, Dawn of Nemunas, “for now.”

Meanwhile, Remigijus Zemaitaitis, leader of the Dawn of Nemunas, insisted that LSDP, DSVL, and LVZS did not have enough votes to form a ruling coalition without the Dawn of Nemunas. LLS leader Viktorija Cmilyte-Nielsen did not rule out that her party could join a centre-left coalition, while DSVL leader Saulius Skvernelis said that his party preferred LLS to LVZS in such a coalition. President Gitanas Nauseda also stated that his preference was for a centre-left coalition, with which he expected better cooperation than with the outgoing government led by the conservative Homeland Union, BNS reported. In the meantime, Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte of the ruling Homeland Union suggested the possibility of forming a minority government.
