Baltic: Number of heat waves more than doubled in 30 years: study

A recent study reveals a significant increase in the occurrence of heat waves in the Baltic States, particularly Estonia, over the past 30 years, ERR reports. Using data from 40 weather stations in 1951-2021, the study assessed changes in heat waves using five common indices: Number, duration, total days, amplitude, and magnitude, showing a marked increase, especially in the frequency and duration of heat waves. The number and frequency of days with extreme heat has more than doubled, with trends being more significant in Estonia compared to Latvia and Lithuania. The increase in minimum temperatures has outpaced that of maximum temperatures, indicating that summer heat problems will continue to intensify with climate warming.
