Estonia: Parliament speaker stresses switch to Estonian-language schools

In his New Year address, Lauri Hussar, speaker of the Estonian parliament, the Riigikogu, outlined key challenges for Estonia in 2024, ERR reports. He emphasised the importance of transitioning to Estonian as the sole language of tuition in schools, viewing it as vital to preserving the country’s language and culture. Hussar urged unity in recognising a singular Estonian identity, dispelling the notion of separate cultural worlds within the nation. Additionally, Hussar called for a comprehensive plan for the Estonian economy to support businesses and foster innovation. He stressed the importance of collective efforts for Estonia’s well-being and success, and highlighted Estonia’s commitment to realistic security policies, including investing in defence.
