The leaders of the three Baltic States held a video conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to discuss the war in Ukraine and European security on 2 March 2025, ERR reports. Starmer apologised for not inviting the Baltic States to a summit of European leaders in London, LRT reported. Asta Skaisgiryte, chief foreign policy adviser to Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, said that the UK was thinking of a “coalition of the willing,” possibly led by the UK and France, to guarantee peace in Ukraine. She said that the leaders agreed on using frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine’s military. Estonian President Alar Karis said that European countries must bear the main burden in providing possible security guarantees to Ukraine, while adding that US involvement is also necessary. Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina stressed Europe’s interest in improving US-Ukrainian relations and transatlantic cooperation, LETA reported. US presence is important for both Ukraine and Europe’s common security, she stated. Also Nauseda insisted on the need to maintain a “strong transatlantic bond” and for the US and Ukraine to “return to the negotiation table, together with Europeans.”
