May and June 2023 were exceptionally dry in Latvia, LETA reports. Average daily rainfall in May 2023 amounted to 12.2 mm, which was just 24% of the monthly norm, according to data from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVGMC). May 2023 was thus the driest May ever since data began to be recorded in 1924. In June 2023, average daily rainfall amounted to 23.4 mm, which was just a third of the monthly norm. June 2023 was the second-driest June in the history of weather observations in Latvia. The driest June ever recorded was in 1969, when average rainfall stood at just 21.6 mm per day.
