Latvia’s outgoing president, Egils Levits, delivered his departure speech on 7 July 2023, LSM reports. He thanked the people of Latvia for giving him the opportunity to serve for four years as their president. Levits said that his role was to work for a Latvian Latvia without "remnants of Soviet occupation." The President said that he stood for the official state language, for education in Latvian, for a unified history narrative, for the recognition of resistance heroes, and for the Latvian legacy. Levits stressed that the Latvian identity must be maintained, and that Latvia’s future lies within the Western value and cultural space. Levits will hand over the presidency to president-elect Edgars Rinkevics on 8 July 2023.
