Lithuanian Defence Minister Arvydas Anusauskas will resign, the government announced, LRT reports. Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte explained that the government wanted to do “more and faster” for Lithuania’s security. Anusauskas revealed that Simonyte had offered him another post but he had refused. The minister said that the offer to swap posts was “unexpected.” Simonyte named Laurynas Kasciunas, chairman of the national security and defence committee of the Lithuanian parliament, the Seimas, as a “logical” replacement for Anusauskas, LRT reported. Kasciunas said that his main task as defence minister would be to implement “total defence.” Simonyte said that she expected the defence minister to convince the Seimas to allocate more funds for defence and to push for universal military conscription.
