Estonia: Former PM Siim Kallas dead at 77

One of the prime architects of the restoration of Estonia’s independence, Siim Kallas, has died at the age of 77 years, his daughter, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, announced, ERR reports. Kallas served as president of the Bank of Estonia in 1991-1995, member of the Estonian parliament, the Riigikogu, in 1995-2004 and 2019-2024, foreign minister in 1995-1996, finance minister in 1999-2002, prime minister in 2002-2003, and European Commissioner in 2004-2014. He was one of the founders of the liberal Estonian Reform Party in 1994. He ran unsuccessfully for president in 2016. President Alar Karis noted that Kallas played an important role in turning Estonia into a free and modern European country.
