Estonia: Government approves new public broadcasting law

The Estonian government has approved amendments to the law regulating the operations of the country’s public broadcaster, Eesti Rahvusringhääling (ERR), ERR reports. Culture Minister Heidy Purga said that the changes would bring the law into line with EU regulations. The amendments would introduce a four-year funding agreement for ERR and fixed-term contracts for editorial management. Also, the proposed amendments take into account that the broadcaster operates not just on radio and television, but on internet platforms as well. The legislative changes are due to enter into force on 1 January 2027. ERR CEO Erik Roose noted that the government’s proposal would not ensure sustainable and adequate funding for public broadcasting, however.
