Lithuania: Orlen may shut down Mazeikiai oil refinery

Poland’s state-owned energy group, Orlen, may shut down its oil refinery in Lithuania, BNS reports. Speaking in an interview with PAP, Orlen CEO Ireneusz Fafara said that the group may end up abandoning a major project to modernise the refinery in Mazeikiai. The project would require additional investments of USD 600-700mn (EUR 536–625mn). Fafara said that without additional investments from Orlen, the group may decide to close the refinery altogether. While the facility is the only oil refinery in the Baltic States, Fafara noted that the facility was located far from major inland markets. Orlen’s Lithuanian subsidiary, Orlen Lietuva, is the country’s single largest taxpayer and employs over 1,500 people. The company’s revenue totalled USD 6.08bn in 2025, which was down 5% from 2024. Annual net profit amounted to USD 26.5bn, which was up from a net loss of USD 744.5mn a year earlier.
