Estonia: President nominates new justice chancellor

Estonian President Ülle Madise has nominated Supreme Court justice Oliver Kask as the country’s next chancellor of justice, ERR reports. Madise, who served as justice chancellor until she was sworn in as president, noted that Kask was a highly regarded expert on constitutional law and the protection of fundamental rights. She assured that he would stand up for the rule of law. Kask pledged to protect the office’s political independence, democracy, and the rule of law, while focusing on social rights, ERR reports. The chancellor of justice is appointed by the Estonian parliament, the Riigikogu, for a seven-year term at a time. Prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court, Kask worked at the Ministry of Justice, chaired the National Electoral Committee, and served as a judge at the Tallinn Circuit Court in 2004-2024.
