Latvia: Drone shot down in eastern Latvia

French fighter jets within NATO’s Baltic air-policing mission shot down a drone in eastern Latvia in the morning of 8 June 2026, the Latvian National Armed Forces (NBS) announced, LSM reports. NBS said that the drone entered Latvian airspace due to Russian “electromagnetic warfare,” TVNET reported. Eyewitness said that the incident occurred near the village of Rogovka in the Rezekne municipality. NBS issued an alert to residents in the municipalities of Aluksne, Balvi, Ludza, and Rezekne at around 9:20 am. This was the first time that a foreign drone was shot down in Latvian airspace. NBS warned residents that such incidents may happen again as long as Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine continues. Earlier, French fighter jets intercepted Russian military aircraft in Baltic airspace 11 times within just one week, Reuters reported. A spokesman for the French Armed Forces said that the number of the Russian provocations was higher than usual.
