Latvia: President asks opposition MP to form new government

Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics has asked MP Andris Kulbergs of the opposition United List to begin forming a new government, LSM reports. Rinkevics said that he chose Kulbergs because United List was the largest opposition group in the parliament, the Saeima, at the moment. Forming a new government was preferable to letting outgoing Prime Minister Evika Silina’s cabinet continue as a caretaker government until the parliamentary elections in October 2026, the President stated. He gave Kulbergs until 25 May 2026 to report on progress in forming a new ruling coalition. Kulbergs vowed that his coalition would work resolutely against corruption and cartels. Before entering politics in 2022, Kulbergs worked in business.
