A group of migrants attacked Lithuanian border guards after entering the country through a tunnel on the border with Belarus, LRT reported. The incident occurred on 26 July 2026 at the Kapciamiestis border checkpoint. Border guards detained the first people who came through the tunnel but were then attacked by about 20 more migrants, forcing the border guards to retreat, DELFI reported. The migrants then fled back into Belarusian territory. A spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) said that neither the officers nor the migrants were injured during the incident. Meanwhile, VSAT will purchase scanning equipment to detect cavities in the ground, Lietuvos Rytas reports. VSAT commander Rustamas Liubajevas said that around 10 tunnels had been detected so far in 2026. He asserted that Belarusian authorities were helping migrants dig the tunnels.
