Lithuania’s Interior Minister, Martynas Katelynas, has asked Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas to deploy troops to the country’s border with Russia’s Kaliningrad region, BNS reports. Katelynas said that the troop deployment was a preventive measure in response to an armed incident on Latvia’s border with Belarus. Speaking in an interview with Die Welt, Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevicius called on NATO for a concrete plan for how to respond to Russia’s hybrid attacks. Rimantas Sinkevicius, chairman of the Lithuanian parliament’s national security and defence committee, noted that certain Russian actions, including its possible military mobilisation, were a cause for concern, ELTA reported. Earlier, Russia warned that it was prepared to use its entire weapons arsenal if NATO countries tried to isolate Kaliningrad, BNS reported. In response, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda stated that NATO had never planned, was not planning, and would not plan to take aggressive actions on Kaliningrad. He assured that Lithuania remained committed to ensuring transit between Kaliningrad and the rest of Russia.
