Russia may have targeted Lithuania’s embassy in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, in a missile attack on 1 August 2026, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys stated, LRT reports. He said that Lithuania could not rule out the possibility that the attack, which damaged the embassy, was deliberate, pointing out that there were almost no strategic facilities near the building. He suggested that the aim could have been to exert pressure or intimidate Lithuania. At the same time, Budrys said that NATO’s response to a Russian missile that landed in eastern Poland should have been stronger, DELFI and LRT reported. He noted that previous NATO moves to increase forces in the region had helped deter further such incidents. Earlier, a Russian airstrike destroyed the building of the Latvian honorary consulate in Sloviansk in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, injuring two volunteer workers, LSM reported.
Meanwhile, Deividas Matulionis, chief national security adviser to Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, said that NATO allies would deploy additional forces and air defence capabilities to Lithuania in the event that Russian provocations in the Baltic region triggered a critical security situation, BNS reported. He assured that NATO was taking recent warnings of an increased risk of Russian provocations in the region seriously. The provocations could range from false-flag operations to acts of sabotage, Matulionis suggested. At the same time, he asserted that the possibility of Russia preparing to invade a NATO member state militarily was “practically zero.” Nevertheless, Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas said that although there were no signs of an increase in Russian military presence along the border, Lithuanian intelligence indicated growing Russian aggression, Lietuvos Rytas reported.
Meanwhile, the Lithuanian Armed Forces (LGP) have deployed troops to reinforce security at strategic sites and critical infrastructure across the country, BNS reported. Troops have been deployed to protect the country’s LNG terminal in Klaipeda, the LitPol Link electricity interconnection with Poland, including the Alytus switchyard and transformer substation, and the Kruonis Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Power Plant. Defence Minister Kaunas said that the force deployment was a precautionary measure and did not indicate a higher threat level. The enhanced security measures would last until 19 August 2026 and could continue beyond that date if necessary, Kaunas said. Also, LGP conducted military exercises to train for the rapid redeployment of troops and equipment to protect critical infrastructure at the port of Klaipeda and the Curonian Spit, BNS reported.
