Baltic: Baltic, Canadian foreign ministers discuss regional, global security

Baltic and Canadian foreign ministers met in the Latvian capital, Riga, on 2 December 2024, European Interest reported. The ministers discussed transatlantic relations as well as regional and global security and cooperation. Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braze stressed that containing Russia and providing strong support to Ukraine were essential for the long-term interests of transatlantic partners, noting that Russia was a long-term threat in the Euro-Atlantic region. She called for stronger sanctions against Russia and those supporting its aggression. Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna compared the current security situation to 1938, ERR reported. At the same time, he assured that the transatlantic bond was “very strong,” noting that the Baltic States gained more security than ever before during US president-elect Donald Trump’s first term in office. Tsahkna suggested that Trump had an opportunity to “become the Winston Churchill of our times.” Meanwhile, Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly pointed to the geopolitical changes since Trump’s first term, noting that there was a clear connection between events in the Indo-Pacific and in Europe.
