Baltic: Business boom in Lithuania, doom in Estonia in 2024

The share of new businesses registered in proportion to the number of active enterprises in Lithuania was the highest in the entire EU in 2024, according to Eurostat data, LSM reports. Lithuania’s so-called enterprise birth rate stood at 17.5% in 2024, compared to 13.9% in Latvia and 12.1% in Estonia. The EU average was 10.4%. Meanwhile, Estonia’s share of enterprises dissolved was the EU’s highest by far in 2024. The enterprise death rate stood at 29.2% in Estonia, compared to 15.6% in Lithuania and 7.2% in Latvia. The EU average was 9.2%. The number of new businesses registered totalled 20,302 in Estonia, 21,259 in Latvia, and 64,848 in Lithuania in 2024, while the number of businesses dissolved amounted to 49,260 in Estonia, 10,958 in Latvia, and 57,797 in Lithuania.
