The chairs of the European affairs committees of the parliaments of the Baltic States and Poland demanded that the EU stop importing LNG from Russia as soon as possible, LSM reported. In a joint letter, the committee chairs insisted that LNG terminals at EU ports should not be used to import gas from Russia. They urged the European Commission, the European Parliament, national parliaments, and the governments of EU member states to take urgent measures to enforce the deadline of 1 January 2027 for stopping all gas imports from Russia. Continuing to buy LNG from Russia maintained the EU’s dependency on a country that uses energy as a weapon, undermining EU unity and public trust, the signatories stated. Ceasing energy imports from Russia must be a long-term commitment, the committee chairs stressed. They called for strengthening relationships with reliable energy suppliers from other regions such as Central Asia, the Middle East, the US, and Norway instead.
