Baltic: Forestry industry’s share of GDP highest in Latvia in 2022

The gross value added (GVA) generated by the forestry and logging industry in the Baltic States was highest in Latvia in 2022, according to Eurostat data, LSM reports. The sector’s GVA totalled EUR 490mn in current prices in Latvia in 2022, which was up from EUR 123mn in 2000. The forestry industry’s GVA totalled EUR 253mn (EUR 69mn) in Estonia and EUR 212mn (EUR 65mn) in Lithuania. GVA per forest area amounted to EUR 144 (EUR 38) per hectare in Latvia, EUR 104 (EUR 31) per hectare in Estonia, and EUR 96 (EUR 32) per hectare in Lithuania. The forestry sector’s GVA accounted for 1.36% (1.46%) of the GDP in Latvia, 0.69% (1.11%) in Estonia, and 0.31% (0.52%) in Lithuania. Altogether 13,200 people worked in the forestry industry in Latvia in 2022, which was up from 12,500 in 2000. The number of employees in the sector totalled 10,000 (12,600) in Lithuania and 5,700 (9,100) in Estonia. Forests cover 54% of the territory of Estonia, 53% of Latvia, and 34% of Lithuania.
