Baltic: Russia claims Ukraine attacking from Baltics

Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) claimed that Ukraine was planning to attack Russia from the territory of the Baltic States, Baltic News Network reported. SVR claimed that Ukrainian soldiers had already been deployed to five military bases in Latvia and threatened Latvia with “just retribution.” Russia’s UN ambassador, Vasily Nebenzya, repeated the claims and threats at the UN Security Council, The Guardian reported. Latvia’s president, prime minister, and foreign minister dismissed the Russian allegations as lies, LETA reported. Also, Latvia’s Foreign Ministry lodged a protest with the Russian chargé d’affaires in Riga, LSM reported.

Meanwhile, Estonian Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur stated that Estonia had not granted permission for the use of its airspace to anyone other than its NATO allies, ERR reported. Lithuania’s president, foreign minister, and defence minister have also refuted the Russian claims as disinformation, BNS reports. Lithuanian presidential adviser Deividas Matulionis and parliamentary speaker Juozas Olekas warned of possible Russian provocations, BNS reported. Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry noted that Russia was redirecting Ukrainian drones into Baltic airspace and waging a propaganda campaign to destabilise public opinion.
