The Chinese embassy in Estonia has sent a diplomatic note to the country’s parliament, the Riigikogu, protesting the participation of Estonian MPs at a reception celebrating Taiwan’s National Day in Tallinn, ERR reports. Altogether eight MPs from various parties attended the event, which was organised by Taiwan’s representative office in Latvia. The Chinese embassy suggested that the presence of Estonian MPs at the event was a “form of official interaction” with Taiwan, violating Estonia’s recognition of the Chinese communist government as the “sole legitimate government of China” and Taiwan as “an inalienable part of Chinese territory.” The embassy advised MPs to “exercise caution” in their words and actions on Taiwan so as not to damage bilateral relations. Meanwhile, Kristo Enn Vaga, chairman of the parliamentary Estonia-Taiwan Support Group, took the Chinese note as a “compliment.” He noted that no foreign country can dictate what members of the Estonian parliament may or may not do. Vaga assured that MPs would continue to engage with Taiwan.
