US president-elect Donald Trump has nominated Estonian-born lawyer Roman Pipko for US ambassador to Estonia, ERR reports. The US Senate is expected to confirm the nomination. Pipko will replace George Kent, who assumed the ambassadorship in January 2023. Trump noted that Pipko worked at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the Russian-American Enterprise Fund. Also, Pipko worked with foreign governments on the enforcement of US sanctions, Trump added. Postimees reports that Pipko studied law at the University of Tartu during the Soviet occupation of Estonia. Former Estonian deputy minister Aadu Kana recalls that Pipko speaks both Russian and Estonian. Pipko’s daughter, Elizabeth Pipko, is the national spokesperson for the US Republican Party.
