Estonian power plants produced 5,686 GWh of electricity in 2023, which was 37% less than in 2022, according to data from Statistics Estonia, ERR reports. Power plants produced 4,323 GWh of heat energy (district heating), which was down 15% on year. The amount of electricity generated from oil shale fell by nearly 40% over a year, accounting for just a third of total electricity production. In 2022, oil shale accounted for more than half of all electricity produced in Estonia. Meanwhile, electricity generated from renewable sources remained at around half of total electricity production. Combined heat and power (CHP) plants produced 1,167 GWh of electricity (down 16%) and 3,800 GWh of heat (down 13%). CHP plants accounted for 20% of all electritity generated in 2023.
