Estonia: Fewer marriages, more divorces in 2025

The number of marriages registered in Estonia totalled 5,998 in 2025, which was 363 fewer than in 2024, according to data from Statistics Estonia, ERR reported. The number of new marriages was the lowest since 2012. The first-marriage rate was 0.45 for men and 0.52 for women. The average age at first marriage was 31.8 years for men and 29.8 years for women. Remarriages accounted for 22% of all new marriages among men and 23% among women. Meanwhile, the number of divorces registered totalled 3,062 in 2025, which was 169 more than in 2024. Harjumaa county accounted for 52% and Ida-Virumaa for 13% of all divorces. Altogether 1,894 Estonian men and 1,897 Estonian women, and 804 Russian men and 892 Russian women, divorced in 2025.

The number of same-sex marriages registered in 2025 was 139. According to a Turu-Uuringute survey for the Estonian Human Rights Centre (EIK) in April 2026, 53% of Estonian residents support the right of same-sex couples to marry, ERR reported. Support among Estonian speakers stood at 60% and among non-Estonian speakers (mostly Russians) at 38%. At the same time, only 51% of Estonian residents consider homosexuality acceptable and 41% unacceptable, with 58% of Estonian speakers saying homosexuality is acceptable compared to 34% of non-Estonian speakers. Meanwhile, only 49% of respondents accept that transgender identity exists, and 37% of the population consider transgender identity acceptable and 45% unacceptable, the survey showed.
