Breaking up Estonia’s state-owned energy group, Eesti Energia, would not improve energy security, Finance Minister Jürgen Ligi stated, ERR reports. Speaking in an interview with Vikerraadio, Ligi insisted that Eesti Energia provided an essential service for society. He said that building a new gas power plant in Narva was a “good idea,” but stressed the need to calculate the project’s commercial viability from a “budgetary policy perspective.” The calculations would be ready in May 2025. In any case, Ligi noted that the power plant would not be ready before 2028. However, dependence on fossil gas from “despotic regimes” was a problem for democracies. At the same time, relying on Eesti Energia’s shale oil power plants as reserve capacity was environmentally harmful and more expensive, he explained.
