The Estonian parliament, the Riigikogu, will convene for an extraordinary session on 2 September 2026 to elect the country’s next president, ERR reports. The only candidate named so far is former interior minister Mart Helme, who was nominated by the opposition Conservative People’s Party of Estonia (EKRE). Incumbent President Alar Karis has not yet announced if he intends to seek a second term. The opposition Estonian Centre Party (Keskerakond) has announced its support for Karis to be reelected, ERR reported. However, his support within the ruling Estonian Reform Party and its coalition partner, Estonia 200, is low. If the parliament fails to elect a new president, the election will move to the electoral college, which consists of 101 MPs and 107 local government representatives, ERR reported.
