Estonia: Parties to spend up to EUR 2mn on elections

Estonia’s major political parties will spend around EUR 1-2mn in campaigning ahead of the parliamentary elections in March 2027, ERR reports. Andres Metsoja, general secretary of the conservative opposition party, Fatherland, estimated that his party would spend around EUR 2mn in campaigning. Õnne Pillak, chairperson of the parliamentary group of the ruling Estonian Reform Party, estimated that the party would spend approximately EUR 1.5mn in election campaigning. Piret Hartman, general secretary of the opposition Social Democratic Party (SDE), said that SDE would spend around EUR 1.1mn, which was roughly the same as in the previous elections in 2023. All parliamentary parties, except Fatherland, receive most of their revenue from state support, ERR reports. Metsoja noted that the overall cost of election campaigning has risen considerably, ERR reports. Given that paid political advertising is now banned on major social media platforms, parties will invest more in other forms of advertising.
