Russia’s military intelligence (GRU) stole thousands of confidential electronic documents, including business secrets and health data, from Estonian ministries in November 2020, ERR reports. Margo Palloson, director general of the Estonian Internal Security Service (KAPO), said that no state secrets were accessed. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications lost 360 GB of data in the hack. Other institutions breached by GRU’s Unit 29155 included the Estonian Transport Administration (Transpordiamet), the Estonian Maritime Administration (VTA), the Geological Survey of Estonia (EGT), the Consumer Protection and Technical Regulatory Authority (TTJA), and the Civil Aviation Administration (Lennuamet). Estonia’s Information System Authority (RIA) fined the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications for failure to patch security vulnerabilities in system management quickly enough, ERR reports.
