Five schools in the Estonian capital, Tallinn, will take part in a pilot project to curb children’s use of smart devices, ERR reports. Ott Oja, head of Tallinn’s mental health action plan for children and youth, said that the city was developing the project in collaboration with researchers at Tallinn University’s Centre for Educational Psychology (HTI). He said that the goal was to support reduced use of smart devices both in school and at home through self-regulation. The primary aim was to decrease screen time so as to improve children’s mental and physical well-being, academic performance, and social skills, ERR reported. Selected schools will pilot the programme starting in 2025. Tallinn plans to extend the programme to all schools by 2026. Earlier, Health Minister Riina Sikkut announced that she would propose legislation to restrict the use of smartphones in primary schools, ERR reported.
