Latvia: Freight traffic on roads rose, fell on railways in 2025

The volume of freight transported by road increased, while the volume of rail freight decreased in Latvia in 2025, according to the Central Statistical Bureau (CSP), LSM reports. The total volume of freight transported by land amounted to 89.8 million tonnes in 2025, which was up 0.6% from 89.3 million tonnes in 2024. The volume of road cargo totalled 80.3 million tonnes (up 2.7%), of which 63.4 million tonnes was domestic cargo (up 3.4%) and 16.9 million tonnes international cargo (unchanged). The volume of rail freight totalled 9.5 million tonnes (down 14.4%), including 1.9 million tonnes of domestic freight (up 4.3%) and 7.6 million tonnes of international freight (down 18.1%). The total cargo turnover of Latvian ports was 34.3 million tonnes (down 4.9%), of which the Freeport of Riga accounted for 16.7 million tonnes (down 7.6%), the Freeport of Ventspils for 8.5 million tonnes (up 3.6%), the Port of Liepaja for 6.9 million tonnes (down 1.4%), and small ports for 2.2 million tonnes (down 18.5%).
