The Latvian government has approved new regulations under which transport and related infrastructure, signs, and information must be in Latvian and, if needed, in another official EU language, LSM reports. The new rules will thus preclude such signs in Russian. Justice Minister Inese Libina-Egnere said that the new rules would create a more attractive environment for foreign tourists and emphasise Latvia’s belonging to the European cultural space. Meanwhile, municipal authorities in the Latvian capital, Riga, will replace all remaining old signs of renamed streets during December 2024, LSM reports. Around 10% of such street signs remain to be replaced. Riga has renamed all streets that carried Russian or Soviet names.
