Latvia’s Central Election Commission (CVK) has proposed introducing new paper ballots for the municipal elections in summer 2025, LSM reports. The State Regional Development Agency (VRAA), which is in charge of the country’s voting system, notes that the existing paper ballots can be confusing for voters. CVK said that the new ballots would be simpler and easier to count automatically. Relevant parliamentary committees have voted to approve the proposed legislative changes, which would come into force by the end of October 2024. However, the parliamentary group of Latvia’s ruling New Unity party argued that the new ballots should only be adopted for the next parliamentary elections due in 2026, LETA reported.
