Latvia: PM nominee drops Progressives from coalition talks

Latvia’s prime minister nominee, MP Andris Kulbergs of the opposition United List, announced that he would seek to form a four-party coalition government, LSM reported. After trilateral talks, United List, the National Alliance, and the Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS) agreed to invite outgoing Prime Minister Evika Silina’s party, New Unity, to the negotiations. However, the National Alliance had refused to cooperate with the Progressives, LETA reported. Earlier, Kulbergs announced that he was seeking to form a coalition of all parliamentary groups except the populist Latvia First (LPV). Kulbergs said that his government would have to review the state budget, possibly as early as in June 2026, so as to reduce expenses, LSM reported. Speaking in an interview with Latvijas Radio, he noted that the rise of fuel prices had “created different conditions for the economy.” Meanwhile, Martins Kazaks, governor of the Bank of Latvia, urged to form a new government as quickly as possible, LETA reported.
