Latvia: PM to begin talks on new coalition

Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs has announced that his United List will begin talks on forming a new government with the party’s current coalition partners, the National Alliance and New Unity, LSM reports. United List will meet with leaders of the two other parties on 28 October 2026. The three parties have a combined 58 MPs in the 101-member parliament, the Saeima. United List plans to meet with other parliamentary groups as well. Kulbergs said that he wanted to build a “team united by clear goals” and willingness to make “difficult decisions.” Earlier, he suggested that the new government could have just 11-14 ministers, LETA reported. President Edgars Rinkevics pointed to the United List’s strong mandate and said that he wanted the new coalition to govern for the full four-year electoral cycle. The new parliament will convene for its inaugural session on 3 November 2026.
