Latvia: President asks PM to form new government

Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics has asked Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs of the United List alliance to form a new government, LSM reports. Rinkevics hoped that the new government could be formed by 18 November 2026, LETA reported. He said that United List had obtained a “very impressive mandate” in the parliamentary elections on 3 October 2026, noting that the party’s record 41 seats in the 100-member parliament, the Saeima, was “unique.”

Earlier, United List leaders stated that they would first hold talks on a new government with their current coalition partners, the National Alliance and New Unity. Such a three-party coalition would have 58 MPs. Kulbergs confirmed that he was not willing to cooperate with the far-right populist party, Latvia First, which was the runner-up in the elections, albeit far behind United List. The newly-elected parliament will convene for its first session on 3 November 2026.
