Lithuania: Trump to consider permanent US military base

US President Donald Trump will consider establishing a permanent US military base in Lithuania, LRT reports. Earlier, Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevicius announced that Lithuania was prepared to cover the costs of permanent US military presence in the country. He welcomed Trump’s response to the proposal, saying that US troop presence in Lithuania was a “critically important deterrent and security guarantee.” Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas thanked Trump for his “truly rational and objective approach to Lithuania.” Kaunas said that he had raised the possibility of a permanent US base in Lithuania during a meeting with the US Under Secretary of Defence for Policy, Elbridge Colby, in late September 2026. Meanwhile, two US Army battalions with 1,000 troops are due to arrive in Lithuania for a nine-month rotation in late October 2026, LRT reports. The deployment was delayed for six months.
