People abusing freedom of speech to spread disinformation and hate speech should be detained and isolated from society, Latvia’s Prosecutor General, Armins Meisters, stated, LETA reports. He said that the Prosecution Office would take action against specific individuals who were acting against Latvia’s national interests under the cover of press freedom and freedom of expression. He assured that law enforcement would not target journalists or people voicing legitimate opinions, however. Meisters stressed the need to understand the seriousness of the problem, saying that freedom of speech had turned into absolute lawlessness that only benefited aggressor states. “We must act immediately to ensure that we do not end up destroying our own country from within,” he warned.
