Estonia will begin building a new permanent base for the Estonian Defence Forces (EDF) in the northeastern border city of Narva later in 2026, Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur announced, ERR reported. The base in the city’s Kadastiku industrial area is due to be completed by the end of 2027. Although all political groups in Narva support the construction of the base, the project has been delayed due to a protracted power struggle in the Narva city council, ERR reported. Pevkur discussed the project earlier with municipal leaders, and the city council finally managed to approve a land swap deal with the state for the military base, ERR reported. Pevkur said that the base would strengthen defence and increase the state’s presence in Narva, bringing more active people to the city and stimulating the local economy. Meanwhile, the EDF will set up hundreds of more ammunition storage facilities across the country, ERR reported.
