The Russian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that crashed in Latvia’s eastern Rezekne municipality was an Iranian-designed Shahed drone carrying 90 kg of explosives, the Latvian National Armed Forces (NBS) announced, LETA reports. The drone’s warhead did not detonate in the crash. NBS deactivated the drone and is now inspecting its components. Janis Garisons, former state secretary at Latvia’s Ministry of Defence, questioned why the drone was not shot down, Baltic News Network reported. NBS said that the drone’s target was not in Latvia. Defence Minister Andris Spruds noted that NBS has to follow proper procedure when shooting down any suspicious objects, LSM reported. He said that NBS would carry out an assessment of its actions during the incident. The UAV crashed in a non-residential clearing in Gaigalava, according to local officials, LETA reported. Latvia’s Foreign Ministry has submitted a protest to Russia over the incident, LSM reports.
