Latvia: Supreme Court reopens digital TV case

Latvia’s Supreme Court has annulled the Riga Regional Court’s decision to acquit all defendants in the so-called second digital TV criminal case, LETA reports. The defendants include former transport minister Ainars Slesers, chairman of the populist Latvia First (LPV) party, former prime minister, prominent businessman Andris Skele, as well as several former executives at the state-owned telecommunications company, Tet (former Lattelecom), and a former top official at the Ministry of Transport. The Supreme Court found that the appellate court had failed to evaluate evidence properly and ordered that the case be sent back to the Riga Regional Court for a new hearing. The case relates to alleged fraud and money laundering in connection with contracts for the development of terrestrial digital TV services in Latvia in 2008-2009, LSM reported.
