The Lithuanian Migration Department (LMD) denied residence to almost 36,000 foreigners in the first eight months of 2024 after the introduction of tighter rules on immigration, according to the Ministry of Interior, BNS reports. LMD received altogether 67,175 residence permit applications. The number of applications to work in Lithuania from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan has dropped sharply. Altogether 11,574 temporary residence permits were revoked for various reasons over eight months, which was up 3.5 times from 3,419 a year earlier. Also, 5,822 foreigners were banned from entering the country, which was almost twice as many as in 2023. Lithuania will limit the number of foreigners allowed to settle in the country to 1.4% of the permanent population per year as of 1 January 2025. Currently, the number of foreigners residing in Lithuania totals around 220,000, including refugees from Ukraine. The number of foreigners with work permits is 116,000.
