The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ordered Lithuania to pay damages to a Saudi national who was detained at a secret CIA prison in the country, BNS reports. The court found that the man was held at the so-called black site near Vilnius for more than five months in 2005-2006. The man, who is suspected of involvement in terrorist attacks, was subjected to torture during detention. He is now being held at the US detention facility in Guantanamo Bay. Earlier, ECHR found that two other Saudi nationals were held at the secret facility in Lithuania.
The Lithuanian Justice Ministry assured that Lithuania would comply with the latest ECHR ruling, BNS reported. Meanwhile, President Gitanas Nauseda insisted that Lithuania should consider “the full range of legal and political factors” when deciding how to implement the court ruling, BNS reported. He continued to deny the existence of the secret prison, while Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevicius said that there was no need for any additional investigation. However, the Prosecutor General’s Office stated that the investigation was still ongoing, BNS reported.
