The council of the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (LSDP) has decided to end its coalition agreement with the far-right populist party, Dawn of Nemunas (PPNA), LRT reports. LSDP will instead begin negotiations with the opposition Union of Democrats for Lithuania (DSVL) on forming a new ruling coalition. LSDP chairman Mindaugas Sinkevicius stated that Lithuanian society needed “stability” rather than “political noise.” PPNA leader Remigijus Zemaitaitis said that his party’s exclusion from the coalition was a “relief,” BNS reported. Meanwhile, President Gitanas Nauseda welcomed LSDP’s decision, ELTA reported. DSVL initially formed a coalition government with LSDP and PPNA after the parliamentary elections in 2024, but was soon replaced by the joint parliamentary group of the Lithuanian Union of Farmers and Greens (LVZS) and the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania (LLRA).
