Five candidates are running to lead Lithuania’s conservative opposition party, Homeland Union (TS-LKD), for the next four years, BNS reports. The five candidates are the party’s acting chairwoman, former education minister Radvile Morkunaite-Mikuleniene, former defence ministers Arvydas Anusauskas and Laurynas Kasciunas, MP Zygimantas Pavilionis, and the chairman of the party’s local branch in Jurbarkas, Daivaras Rybakovas. Kasciunas is deemed to be the overall favourite. The first round of the election will be held on 9 February 2025. Both party members and non-members are eligible to vote. Homeland Union’s former chairman, Gabrielius Landsbergis, resigned from the post following the party’s loss in the parliamentary elections in October 2024. Former prime minister Ingrida Simonyte refused to run for the leadership post, Baltic News Network reported.
