Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene and her government have resigned from office, BNS reports. Ruginiene was appointed prime minister in September 2025 after the resignation of then prime minister Gintautas Paluckas, leader of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP). Ruginiene revealed that the plan at the time was for LSDP’s new chairman, Mindaugas Sinkevicius, to become prime minister, but that the move was delayed. Sinkevicius is now due to become prime minister in a new coalition government, while Ruginiene is expected to return to her previous position as head of the Ministry of Social Security and Labour, BNS reported.
Meanwhile, President Gitanas Nauseda’s foreign policy adviser, Asta Skaisgiryte, said that the president expected his former chief national security adviser, Kestutis Budrys, to stay on as foreign minister in the new government, BNS reported. Skaisgiryte assured that the president was satisfied with the minister’s performance. In the meantime, over 30 Lithuanian human rights groups urged the new coalition not to reappoint Rita Tamasuniene of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania (LLRA) as justice minister, ELTA reported. The groups criticised Tamasuniene for obstructing the implementation of court rulings on the registration of civil partnerships.
