Lithuania: President criticises Defence Minister’s Facebook posts about German tanks

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda criticised Defence Minister Arvydas Anusauskas for sharing information on Lithuania’s plans to sign a letter of intent on the purchase of Leopard tanks from Germany, LRT reports. Nauseda said that the State Defence Council (VGT) had agreed that restricted information “should not be shared on Facebook right after the meeting.” He said that it was a “pity that we have to keep reminding seemingly grown-up people” not to share such information. Earlier, Anusauskas explained on Facebook that the Lithuanian Armed Forces (LGP) deemed the German Leopard tanks most suitable, adding that US-made Abrams and South Korean Black Panther tanks failed to meet operational requirements. Former prime minister Saulius Skvernelis, chairman of the opposition Union of Democrats for Lithuania (DSVL), said that the minister’s statements undermined Lithuania’s bargaining power.
